adjustable fingerless mitts

It's nearing autumn and the days will soon be growing chillier. Why not make some cosy fingerless mitts to keep you that little bit warmer?

Materials:
Less than 100g DK/Worsted yarn (I used DK, but worsted would make them warmer and a tad bigger)
4mm hook

Note:
Both mitts are worked the same.
This is written using UK TERMINOLOGY.
Special stitches used include UK 'fptr' (US fbdc) and UK 'bptr' (US bpdc).
The following directions are for a ladies medium-large, but to adjust, you simply need to add chs at the beginning and make sure you are consistent with that change throughout the pattern, e.g. by changing number of repeats. To change the size of the thumb hole, simply make more/less chs as needed when you get to the thumb part and skip those extra/fewer stitches. I hope this makes sense.

Directions:
Ch28 and sl st into 1st ch to make a ring.
1. Ch3 (counts as a st), tr in next st, tr in each st around. Sl st in top of 3-ch to join. (28)
2-5. Ch 3 (counts as a bptr), [fptr in next st, bptr in next st] x13, fptr in last st. Sl st in top of 3-ch to join (28)
6-11. Ch3 (counts as a st), tr in next st and in each st around. Sl st in top of 3-ch to join (28)
12. This is the round where you'll make the thumb-hole. Ch 3 (counts as a st), tr in next 22sts, ch5, sk5 sts, sl st in top of 3-ch to join (28)
13. Ch 3 (counts as a st), tr in next st and in each st and ch around. Sl st in top of 3-ch to join (28)
14. Ch3 (counts as a st), tr in next st and in each st around. Sl st in top of 3-ch to join (28)
15-18. Ch3 (counts as a bptr), [fptr in next st, bptr in next st] x13, fptr in last st. Sl st in top of 3-ch to join (28)
FO and weave in ends.

If you wish, you can now add embelishments. I added a leaf because I originally designed this for a competition where the theme was 'poem', and I chose "Autumn" by Rainer Maria Rilke.

Have fun!
